Expert tips to help sell your home

If you have any plans to sell your home and move home in the future, first impressions count and it is not just the look of the house that can make a difference to a sale, the state of your front garden can also impact the perceptions of would-be buyers on the property and surrounding area.

We spoke to Ian Smith at WPR, one of our sponsors, who gave some top tips on how to increase the value of your house by improving your front garden to give it some kerb appeal.  A well-tended front garden can increase the value of your home and give a positive first impression, rather than potential buyers being put off by an unruly jungle!

Size really does not matter. If you have a small garden that is filled with car parking spaces don’t worry, if you can make space for hanging baskets, pots and containers that are brimming with flowers visitors will be impressed.

A well-tended lawn, which is free from moss and with stripes is more appealing and shows that you care.

A garden path free from weeds, that has been jet washed and looks well-kept will help create that wow factor.

If there is space, placing a bench in a spot where you get sun shows that it is a lovely place to spend time outside.

At certain times of year, climbing plants can add value to your property, wisteria for example can be stunning in the spring and summer, however do try to avoid plants like ivy which can take over.

For a courtyard garden you can make this look attractive with pots and containers and give the impression that it is easy to maintain.

Don’t worry if you live in a flat, make sure you have hanging baskets or window boxes to brighten up the space.

If you are lucky enough to have a communal garden, take time out to make it look tidy.

It really is worth knowing that even if your house or flat needs work doing inside, if the outside space is unappealing, it could affect the number of buyers booking to see your home, and worse, it could also reduce the offer.  Ian recommends that by just spending a little time on the front this will ensure that potential visitors don’t drive by and instead are impressed with the kerb appeal and organise a visit.
